The RPCVHI group was first informally organized in the late
1980s. In 1991, (Aug. 7th) the first RPCV association was created. After more than a decade of activities, we became
a registered non-profit organization in 2004. We are currently seeking
federal recognition as a 501 c(3) organization.
We
are still actively trying to reconnect to RPCVs living in Hawaii
through our local RPCV group. Currently, our membership directory maintains more
than 900 RPCV contacts. Since 1961 more than 1274 Hawaii state residents
have served in the Peace Corps. Currently, there are 36 residents
serving, up more than 70% from the 21 volunteers in 2007.
Our group has received several prestigious national and local awards including the 2004 The Loret
Miller Ruppe Award
for Outstanding Community Service awarded by the The National Peace
Corps Association and the 'Olelo 8th Annual Video Award for Excellence
in a Cultural/Ethnic Program. In 2004, we hosted speaking engagements
with Kevin Quigley, President of the National Peace Corps Association
and in 2004 Gaddi H. Vasquez, Peace Corps Director.
Our primary activities are the production of Bring the World Home, a local 30 minute cable TV series and the Honolulu AIDS Walk. Since 2005 we have raised more than $4000 for the Honolulu AIDS walk.
We
would like to take the opportunity to invite you to create a membership
and would like to request your continued support. As a member of
RPCVHI, you will join our Hawaii network, and receive messages
announcing special events and upcoming community volunteer and
community and social activities throughout the year.
